PHUTI MOSOMANE
ESKOM CEO Andre de Ruyter has resigned from the power utility with immediate effect following a special Board meeting on Wednesday.
“Andrè de Ruyter leaves Eskom with immediate effect,” Eskom said in a media statement, adding that the decision followed a special Board meeting held on February 22 2023.
“The Eskom Board and Group Chief Executive (GCE) Andre de Ruyter have reached mutual agreement to curtail his notice to 28 February 2023,” Eskom said.
De Ruyter will leave Eskom without serving any notice.
Earlier, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan told Parliament that CEOs of state-owned entities should steer away from “open political debate”.
Gordhan’s comments come after scathing, ‘politically charged’ remarks made by De Ruyter during an interview with eNCA in which he claimed that senior ANC leaders were involved in fraud and corruption at Eskom.
“What’s important is that CEOs of any entity, including Eskom, should not be involved in open political debates or assertions, and where they have political views, that is their private business and they are welcome to express those views privately,” Gordhan told parliament’s portfolio committee on public enterprises on Wednesday.
