RENOWNED jazz singer and songwriter Gloria Bosman has died at the age of 50 after a short illness, her family has confirmed.
“It is with profound sadness that we share that in the early hours of this morning, we lost the rock of our family, a beloved mother, grandmother and a sister Gloria Bosman who came to fame for her soulful and soothing voice,” her family announced on Tuesday.
Bosman, who was born in Soweto, “transcended peacefully at her home surrounded by family”.
The jazz legend made an immense contribution to the music industry and devoted her life to her craft.
Tributes poured in on Tuesday following the news of her untimely death.
“So Sad, gutted, Rest in Peace my dear friend #gloriabosman, thank you for sharing the stage and sharing your gift with us all, am shattered – Love and respect Sipho and the hotband,” tweeted Hotstix@siphohotstix.
Professor Thuli Madonsela tweeted: “So vibrant, super amazing and exceptionally inspiring – now gone too soon. Heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and fans of Gloria Bosman. May her vibrant soul.”
During her stellar music career, Bosman has shared the stage with several musical greats; including Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, Moses Molelekwa, Tananas and Sipho Mabuse, to name just a few.
Her debut album, Tranquillity, earned her the prestigious award for Best Newcomer as well as received nominations for Best Contemporary Jazz Album and Best Female Artist at the 2001 SAMAs.
