Financial services provider and holding company, FirstRand Group, has warned of the possibility of acts of violence by supporters of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party during and after the upcoming national and provincial elections because of former President Jacob Zuma’s exclusion from contesting in the elections.
The group compiled an internal memo as a medium risk level, which was leaked to the media this week, and warned about a high risk for intimidation, malicious damage to property, arson, barricading of roads, looting, hijacking of trucks as well as clashes between supporters of the MK party, opposing political parties and with authorities should demonstrations take place.
Three provinces have been identified as possible hot-spots, namely KwaZulu-Natal and to a lesser extent Gauteng and Mpumalanga due to the respective support bases in those regions.
