African National Congress (ANC) KwaZulu-Natal secretary Bheki Mtolo has formally apologised to the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) after accusing its members of substandard work in government departments.
Mtolo announced his apology during a meeting held at Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme House on Tuesday.
“After a thorough political discussion and wise counsel from the ANC secretary general and the general secretary of Cosatu, I wish to unconditionally apologise to Nehawu, its leadership and entire membership,” Mtolo said.
“I wish to unreservedly withdraw these statements which created an environment of mistrust and unnecessary provocative”.
Mtolo said that the most important lesson he had learned was that
mistakes committed in the course of struggle for social transformation should be internalised and never be repeated.
“In the ANC-led alliance, there are millions of members and it is natural to anticipate that there will be many different views on any matter, but as the ANC secretary general advised in the meeting, ANC leaders must never be hostile to constructive criticism,” he said.
ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula had to step in to deal with the matter. Nehawu had threatened a R2 million lawsuit against the party and Mtolo.
Mtolo said he was committed to work for the unity of the alliance and to further the objectives of the National Democratic Revolution.
