Motorists have been given the green light to use the N3 again following heavy snowfalls over the weekend, however, they must do so with caution.
According to N3 Toll Concessions full mobility had been restored on the route.
“Although the road is now safe enough for travel, it is highly recommended that road users only commence their trips from Wednesday,” said N3TC chief operating officer Thania Dhoogra.
The snowfalls in the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal caused major traffic disruptions and saw motorists being stranded for almost two days between the Tugela Plaza and Harrismith.
Dhoogra also warned road users to travel during the day as it was safer.
“We remind road users to plan ahead and be prepared for any eventuality before you set out on your journey. Pay attention to road and weather conditions and stay informed. Conditions on a road can change rapidly as we have seen over the few days,” said.
Many motorists failed to adhere to advice from the SA Weather Service and the government to stay indoors and cancel trips.
Meanwhile, Eskom has been working around the clock to repair faults caused by the snow in in several areas in KwaZulu-Natal.
Joyce Zingoni, from the power utility’s industry support and stakeholder management said: “A total 75% of the outages have been cleared in areas that were accessible and technicians are on standby to attend to faults in the areas where access is being hampered due to road closures.”
Eskom has appealed for patience from customers as restoration will take time.
