The Eastern Cape Democratic Alliance has warned that recent spate of abductions along the Wild Coast could have devastating effects for tourism in the region.
The area relies heavily on the sector for its economic growth.
The party’s spokesperson of economic development, environmental affairs and tourism, Leander Kruger, has called on Premier Oscar Mabuyane to take decisive steps to curb abductions in the area.
“This alarming trend not only endangers lives but also poses a severe threat to the region’s tourism industry, which is vital for local economies and livelihoods,” she said.
Leander said the recent abduction of Alize van der Merwe, who was driving from the East London airport along the Wild Coast when she was abducted, has brought this crisis into stark reality.
According to reports, Van der Merwe landed in East London on Friday and was travelling to Umngasi Resort in Port St Johns
