The Portfolio Committee for Home Affairs has commended the department on progress made in reducing the historical permit backlogs for foreign nationals who were awaiting their visas outcomes.

Committee chairperson Mosa Chabane said he was impressed by the processes in place to ensure an uninterrupted and verifiable application process, after their visit to the operation centre of the reduction team.

“The visit of the operation centre yesterday marked the beginning of the committee’s weeklong oversight programme to the department and its entities in Gauteng,” Chabane said on Tuesday.

He also applauded the department’s anti-corruption unit, calling on the department to hire additional people to ensure that the unit was enhanced.

“The team is currently doing commendable work, but the fact that they are under resourced can’t be overemphasised,” he said.

“The committee was impressed by the anti-corruption analysis team that is able to identify emerging trends in malfeasance at all its manifestations, especially the transportation of stolen vehicles across the border.”

Chabane said he was concerned about the regression in the audit opinion of the department and urged it to implement suitable measures to address this issue.
