The Western Cape infrastructure department has surpassed its job opportunity targets for the 2023/2024 financial year by creating job opportunities and upskilling individuals.
Department spokesperson Dirk Wessels said the target for job opportunities was 4500. The department had managed to create an extra 179 opportunities.
Of these, 2664 were taken up by youngsters and 1666 by women.
“In addition, 1333 individuals were enrolled in various training programmes. A total of 67 local SMMEs were engaged to help develop and construct road infrastructure, proving much needed work opportunities for local communities,” he said on a statement.
On upskilling, short courses were provided to 113 participants, leadership programmes to 428 people and external bursaries to 174 recipients.
A total of 40 people participated in a professional development programme and 574 in a contract development programme.
He said on Tuesday the department prioritised working with local SMMEs not only to focus on promoting economic growth, but to also build up the skills base of communities.
“Creating jobs and developing skills in our communities is a cornerstone of economic resilience. By partnering with local SMMEs and providing vital upskilling opportunities, the department of infrastructure is building a stronger and more inclusive economy in the Western Cape,” he said.
