President Cyril Ramaphosa has wished the South African Hindu community a blessed and festive Diwali festival.
“The Festival of Lights, with its origins in the triumph of good over evil, is a period for all South Africans to recommit to overcoming the inequalities, disadvantage and social ills that affect parts of our society and many parts of the world today,” Ramaphosa said in a statement on Thursday.
He said the values of non-violence and peace were central to creating a better society.
“The values of truth, love, peace and non-violence by which Hindus live and conduct themselves within family and community are values that are at the heart of creating a better country and a better world.”
Meanwhile, Tshwane’s emergency service department, which also wished its Hindu community a happy Diwali celebration, reminded participants that private fireworks displays need to be approved by the department.
There are several guidelines that needed to be followed to ensure that people were safe when setting off fireworks.
