The Democratic Alliance has congratulated Cape Town Pride for successfully bringing the prestigious World Pride event to the city in 2028.
This is the first time World Pride will be held in Africa.
Nicholas Gotsell, the DA’s constituency head, said on Tuesday that Cape Town outshone Mexico to win the hosting bid.
“Cape Town Pride beat out the bid from Guadalajara Pride (Mexico) to be awarded the hosting opportunity. When asked ‘Can you host?’ Cape Town unequivocally replied ‘yes!’”
The DA acknowledged the tireless efforts of Michael Gladwin, Tommy Patterson, and Cllr Rob Quintas, who represented CPT Pride in the bid.
Economic growth MMC Alderman James Vos highlighted the potential of the event to boost tourism and job creation in the Western Cape.
“Cape Town looks forward to welcoming travellers from all across the globe to celebrate the joyous unity of diversity,” he said.
World Pride, launched in Rome in 2000, is a global phenomenon that champions human rights, equality and diversity through conferences, outdoor events and celebrations.
World Pride 2028 is expected to draw travellers from around the world, further solidifying the city’s reputation as a premier LGBTQIA+ travel destination.
