The SA Human Rights Commission has called for a rigorous probe into the killing of Muhsin Hendricks, South Africa and world’s first openly gay imam, who was gunned down in Bethelsdorp, Gqeberha on Saturday.
It is said that should it be confirmed that Hendricks was targeted for his advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community, this crime would highlight the urgent need for the implementation of the Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Act.
“South Africa has made significant strides in enshrining the right to equality and non-discrimination, but targeted violence against marginalised communities remains a critical concern,” said the commission.
Hendricks was a pioneering advocate for equality and inclusion, particularly for the LGBTQIA+ individuals within the Muslim community.
His work aimed to create spaces of dignity and recognition for all, challenging discrimination and advocating for human rights within the framework of religious expression.
