The presiding officers of Parliament have called on all who can, to assist flood victims in the Eastern Cape.

“Disasters of this magnitude demand a collective response,” said National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces chairperson Refilwe Mtshweni.

“We call on individuals and organisations with the means to assist to extend a helping hand to those in need.”

The death toll in the Eastern Cape currently stands at 78.

They sent their condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones, and said they stood in solidarity with all those whose homes and livelihoods have been affected.

“At this difficult time, we commend the tireless efforts of emergency services and community members in both provinces who are working relentlessly to rescue survivors and provide relief.”

They urged all South Africans to unite in support of the affected communities, asking everyone to cooperate fully with rescue and relief operations to ensure safety and an effective disaster response.
