Two South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers have died following an early morning altercation on Saturday at the Macadamia Military Base near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga.
It is alleged that one soldier fatally stabbed a colleague and injured another before taking his own life.
The second stabbed soldier sustained minor injuries and is recovering.
SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Tshabalala confirmed the incident, describing it as a rare and tragic occurrence. He added that the families of the deceased have been informed.
“The SANDF expresses its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased members. This is a deeply painful moment for the organisation and the military community at large,” said Tshabalala.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) and SANDF have launched a full investigation into the matter.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under inquiry, and further details will be released once officially verified. We urge the public and media to refrain from speculation and to respect the privacy of the affected families during this difficult time,” Tshabalala said.
