Khuzani Mpungose has taken Maskandi music global. The KwaZulu-Natal-born artist won the Best Independent Artist (African) award at the Hollywood and African Prestigious Awards (HAPA Awards) in Los Angeles, USA.

It was a historic moment for one of South Africa’s most culturally rich music genres. The recognition marked a milestone in his career and the growing global appreciation for Maskandi music, one of the country’s rooted music genres.

With the international recognition, Khuzani has elevated his career and has placed a spotlight on a musical genre that has historically been underrepresented on global platforms.

“This award is a blessing and a responsibility. It shows that Maskandi is not just music,  it is history, identity, and a voice for our people. To see it recognised on a global stage fills me with pride and humility. This win belongs to every supporter who has walked with me. Thank you for believing in Maskandi and believing in me,” he said.

Khuzani’s journey to the HAPA Awards has been described as independent excellence due to him being awarded without the backing of major labels.

The musician has built a stable career through consistent musical output and his unique live performances.

In an industry often driven by trends and commercial formulas, Khuzani has remained rooted in the isiZulu language and traditional instrumentation and the lived experience of his community.

The HAPA Awards win also positions Maskandi alongside other African genres gaining international traction, such as Amapiano, Afropop, and contemporary African soul.
