President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Thursday receive R1billion worth of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) donated by global internet group Naspers South Africa.

The handover will take place at the Takealot Distribution Centre in Kempton Park.

This comes after COSATU and other pressure groups called on government to address the shortages of protective gear for healthcare workers in South Africa.

According to the Department of Health, the number of healthcare workers who have been infected is 135.

There are currently 5 350 confirmed of COVID-19 in South Africa, an increase of 354 from Wednesday.

On Friday, the country is set to move to Stage 4 of the national lockdown in order to allow for some modicum of economic activity.

The Presidency said in a statement that Naspers’ donation was a significant contribution to healthcare and to the partnership between government and the private sector in the fight against COVID-19
