Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns were both knocked out of the Nedbank Cup on Saturday, as the round of 16 produced a bruising afternoon for two of the country’s heavyweights.
Pirates’ bid for another cup run ended in Soweto when second-tier Casric Stars held them 0-0 over 120 minutes before winning 5-4 on penalties at the Orlando Amstel Arena.
Earlier in Mpumalanga, TS Galaxy stunned Sundowns 2-0 at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium, with Siphamandla Ngwenya striking in the 19th minute and Junior Zindoga converting a penalty on 32 minutes to knock the “Brazilians” out of the competition.
In Umlazi, Golden Arrows edged Stellenbosch 1-0 at King Zwelithini Stadium thanks to Angelo van Rooi’s 66th-minute winner, keeping Arrows’ trophy hopes alive.
The day’s other tie went all the way too, as Durban City beat Upington City 2-0 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in Upington — a shootout described by the PSL as “bizarre”, with the hosts missing all their attempts.
