The DA has appointed Abel Tau as the acting mayor of Tshwane while scandal-hit Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa is on special leave.

The party’s Federal Legal Commission is investigating Mokgalapa following allegations that he had sex with MMC for Roads and Transport Sheila Senkubuge.

Mogkalapa has maintained his innocence, saying he was being blackmailed with an audio recording leaked to the public.

Tau has been serving as a member of the MMC for Utilities and the DA Gauteng north regional chairperson since 2017.

“Together with his mayoral team, he will continue to deliver efficient basic services to the residents of Tshwane and ensure that other services rendered to residents are not affected,” the DA said in a statement .

The ANC Caucus in the City of Tshwane has meanwhile tabled an urgent motion of no confidence against the Mokgalapa, as well as an item including calling for the removal of Acting City Manager Moeketsi Ntsimane.

ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule Thursday confirmed Geoff Makhubo as its candidate for Johannesburg Mayor.

Makhubo was one of three names suggested to ANC national officials for the position.

“Comrade Makhubo who is ANC Joburg’s Regional Chairperson brings with him a wealth of governance experience from both the private sector and within the public sector.

“He is currently a public representative in the City of Johannesburg and is the leader of the ANC Caucus. Comrade Makhubo has previously served as the Mayoral Committee Member responsible for finance in the City,” the ANC Gauteng said in a statement confirming his appointment.
