THE Democratic Alliance (DA)’s Alan Winde has been elected for a second term as Premier of the Western Cape.
In a session of the provincial legislature on Thursday, Winde was sworn in as a Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) and elected as Premier, after receiving 26 out of 42 votes.
The African National Congress (ANC)’s candidate Muhammad Khaled Sayed, came in second, with 14 votes in his favour.
In his speech, Winde thanked the legislature for their support and admitted that more needed to be done in the province.
“It is a profound honour and privilege that I have been given. In my first term of office, we achieved so much in our efforts to address the wicked problems facing this province, but I know that many of those still remain,” he said.
Winde said he owed it to the residents to work even harder in his second term as the provincial government’s leader.
“I saw how many of our residents are struggling and the responsibility that we as government have to step in and provide that critical social safety net for each of them,” Winde said.
The DA’s Daylin Mitchell was re-elected as speaker getting 26 votes, beating the ANC’s Ayanda Barnes who received 12 votes.
Following the election of the Speaker, Winde is expected to officially be sworn in as Premier and appoint his Cabinet later in the day.
The party enjoys a majority in the provincial legislature, holding 24 of the 41 seats.
