The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) is set to launch its own on-demand e-hailing service, Gau Express, in October to improve commuter access to Gautrain stations and address longstanding first- and last-mile transport challenges.
In a statement issued over the weekend, the agency said the app-based Gautrain Express Service would connect commuters with drivers in real time to improve convenience for passengers travelling to and from stations.
“The service forms part of Gautrain’s innovations and mobility integration solutions,” the agency said.
The GMA said the initiative followed ongoing efforts to provide an efficient, safe and reliable passenger experience, while addressing gaps identified in its feeder and distribution network.
“This is aimed at addressing gaps the GMA has identified in its Feeder and Distribution Service, for customers travelling to and from Gautrain stations,” the statement read.
“The Gautrain Express service will address these first- and last-mile gaps and ensure seamless travel to and from Gautrain stations.”
The announcement sparked debate online, particularly around safety concerns and competition with existing e-hailing operators.
Facebook user Mothusi Tsebela questioned how Gautrain would address security concerns that have previously affected e-hailing operators near some stations.
“There’s definitely no shortage of e-hailing services. The main reason they don’t operate around your stations has been the ever-looming threat of violence from the other meter taxi operators,” he commented.
Another user, Tshepiso Makgobathe, urged Gautrain to partner with local entrepreneurs instead of creating competition.
“As a government entity please collaborate with us instead of creating competition,” Makgobathe wrote, adding that his company had been developing a local mobility app aimed at reducing tensions between taxis and e-hailing operators.
The agency said it would continue engaging government stakeholders and transport role players to ensure the new service integrates with Gauteng’s broader public transport system.
