PHUTI MOSOMANE
DESPITE several hours of deliberations, an extraordinary council meeting in the City of Joburg ended without the election of a new mayor for the city, leaving the metro mayorless for another few days.
The previous mayor, Thapelo Amad, resigned from the position just three months after being voted in through a coalition led by the ANC and the EFF.
The ANC-EFF coalition partners announced that Kabelo Gwamanda would be their candidate, but there were divisions among the ANC councillors, with some preferring COPE councillor Colleen Makhubele or ANC’s Johannesburg chairperson Dada Morero.
Meanwhile, ActionSA Gauteng chairperson, Funzi Ngobeni, supported by a coalition including the IFP, the FF Plus, the ACDP, and the UIM, was also a candidate for the position of mayor.
The DA announced it would push for former DA mayor Mpho Phalatse as its mayoral candidate.
The council meeting was adjourned following a request for a caucus break by Al Jamah’ah, which caused dissatisfaction among opposition parties who wanted the voting to go ahead. The council meeting will reconvene on Friday.
