THE Department of Labour has gazetted an increase in South Africa’s minimum wage from R20.76 per hour to R21.69.
The new rate will come into effect from next month.
This means that farmworkers are entitled to a minimum wage of R21.69 per hour.
Domestic workers are entitled to a minimum wage of R19.09 per hour and workers employed on an expanded public works programme (EPWP) will receive a minimum wage of R11.93 per hour.
Labour department’s spokesperson Musa Zondi confirmed the break down.
“Domestic workers will now be entitled to R19.09 per hour, which is an increase from R16, Expanded Public Works Program employees will now earn R11.93 per hour and, farmworkers are entitled to R21.69 per hour,” said Zondi.
According National Minimum Wage Act of 2018, it is illegal for an employer to unilaterally alter working hours or other conditions of employment when implementing the national minimum wage.
Zondi said the new rate excludes other allowances such as transport, tools, food, and accommodation.
