Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Finance Minister Tito Mboweni have clashed over the controversial e-toll project, posting brusque exchanges on Twitter.
During his state of the province address this week, Makhura said he is committed to scrapping the tolling system and vowed to even pay some of the debt with the provincial government budget.
This apparently did not sit well with Mboweni.
The Finance minister then addressed the Gauteng premier directly.
Makhura responded, adding some spice to the mix.
Mboweni then pulled rank, evoking the age-old ‘me Chief you Indian’ adage.
And promptly drew a Twitter backlash with a tweet dubbed mostly “arrogant” by tweeters.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula joined in the bumpy ride, trying to “poor” water on the flames…
The sign posting by Lebogang Maile, Gauteng Human Settlements MEC, was emphatic and left no doubt about the journey ahead.
Not to be left behind, Wayne Duvenage from the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) hitched his wagon to the tweet convoy.
But the car was on the road, and angry South Africans blasted “egotistical” Mboweni with a barrage of angry tweets rolling in.
Former Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa also joined the trek.
