DEPUTY President David Mabuza has warned delegates at the party’s North West conference that South Africans are losing confidence in the ANC and starting to doubt its ability to lead society.
Mabuza was speaking at the party’s 9th provincial conference held in Rustenburg, which is expected to end on Sunday with a newly elected leadership.
“It is a known fact, the ANC is facing huge challenges … We meet at a time when the people we profess the ANC serves as the leader of society, are questioning and in doubt about our ability to provide leadership to the complex societal challenges of the hour,” said Mabuza.
Mabuza said the renewal of the ANC must happen, saying it t is time that it happened, for the sake of the people of the North West province.
“Our people see an organization that is busy with internal squabbles, rather than the duty to build the nation,” said Mabuza.
“North West is the home of the ANC. We say that because you make sure that in the midst of the challenges, the integrity of the ANC is still intact.”
He further told delegates that they should know that the society is not interested in their internal differences and vicious fights for leadership positions that put them in proximity to power to control resources.
“They are more concerned by what practical resolutions are adopted by the conference to deal with prevailing challenges they face in their daily lives, such as poverty, hunger, starvation, unemployment, inequalities, and poor delivery of services,” he said.
The North West conference finally got underway on Saturday following seveeral delays and the legal drama that saw the interim provincial committee (IPC) stripped of voting powers.
On Friday night the North West High Court in Mahikeng granted the urgent interdict application after disgruntled member Tshepo Bosman argued that the IPC was unconstitutional as its term of office had ended three years ago.
The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) deployees said they were not aware of letter reportedly sent by disgruntled members informing the party’s acting secretary-general Paul Mashatile of their intention to continue with the court action to stop the conference.
Current Premier Bushy Maape and former member of parliament, Nono Maloi, are expected to contes for the position of ANC Chairperson.
This after former Provincial Chairperson Supra Mahumapelo withdrew from the race on Saturday.
