President Cyril Ramaphosa has offered his deepest condolences to the Molokoane family, following the passing of gospel icon, Solomon Molokoane, popularly known as Solly Moholo.
Ramaphosa said his thoughts were with the Molokoane family and that his contribution to the spiritual and cultural life of the nation could never be forgotten.
“Solly Moholo provided the melodies, rhythms and words of inspiration and comfort, such as we need now, that were the soundtrack of faith, worship and community for millions of South Africans and neighbours in our region for decades,” he said.
Molokoane’s management team confirmed his passing on Thursday. He was in hospital after battling an illness that emerged during his pre-album tour in Botswana.
In August, he had started touring in Botswana to launch his upcoming album entitled “Wubani O zo Pepeza”.
Despite being well received by the people of SA’s neighbouring country, he had to be rushed to hospital after falling ill.
He was subsequently transferred to a South African hospital at the end of August, but remained in intensive care, with doctors reporting that he urgently required a brain operation.
Molokoane popularised Mokhukhu music, a blend of traditional gospel sounds and modern township influences in the early 2000s, and released over 20 albums.
Many have extended tributes, including fellow musicians such Rebecca Malope, Dr. Tumi and Winnie Mashaba.
His family has requested privacy.
The funeral and memorial arrangements are yet to be announced.
