The Thabo Mbeki Foundation (TMF) has welcomed the Inquiry into Media Ethics initiated by the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF).
The Foundation said the initiative, the “first of its kind in our history and more specifically in post-apartheid South Africa, the inquiry provides a rare opportunity openly to discuss media ethics in a broad context.”
The inquiry will be chaired by retired Judge Kathleen Satchwell.
The TMF said South Africa and the country’s media profession urgently require an examination of these and other questions both in the media’s and the national interest.
“As an integral part of a society’s cultural institutions which shape the nation’s image of itself, ideas and their expression, a reflection on the media and how it goes about discharging its stated objectives and responsibilities is an undertaking of vital national importance,” the Foundation said.

SANEF said the Media Ethics Inquiry is part of efforts to rebuild the credibility of the media and to restore the trust between the media and the public.
