The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 has been rescheduled and will now take place from 25 July to 16 August 2026.

CAF confirmed the decision in a statement on Thursday, saying the change was made following consultations with global football governing body FIFA and other stakeholders.
“After discussions between CAF and its partners, FIFA and other stakeholders, CAFdecided to reschedule the dates of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026, to 25 July – 16 August 2026; to ensure the success of this important women’s competition, in the light of certain unforeseen circumstances,” CAF said in a statement.

The tournament had originally been scheduled to take place from 17 March to 3 April in Morocco, but the continental body opted to move the event after what it described as “unforeseen circumstances” affecting preparations.

“Preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 are underway and all the parties are confident that it will be very successful,” CAF said.

The decision came just days before the initial kick-off date, creating uncertainty for teams that had already begun their preparations and travel plans for the tournament in Morocco.

Morocco was awarded the hosting rights for the tournament in October 2024, and preparations for the competition are continuing despite the schedule change.

However, CAF said it remains confident that the tournament will be successfully delivered.

The 2026 edition will also mark a significant milestone for women’s football on the continent, as the competition will feature 16 teams for the first time, expanding from the previous 12-team format.

Defending champions Nigeria women’s national football team will be aiming to retain their title after lifting the trophy in the 2024 edition.

The postponement has also sparked reactions within the African football community.

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie was reported stating that the country would be willing to step in as hosts if required.

“We are ready and open for business and tourists as South Africa. We are retaking our responsibility as the giant of Africa when it comes to hosting,” McKenzie said following the announcement.

Despite the sudden change in dates, CAF has reassured participating nations and stakeholders that preparations are continuing and that the rescheduled tournament is expected to deliver a successful showcase of women’s football on the continent.
