National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) Chief General Rudzani Maphwanya have announced the deployment of more than 2,000 members of the SANDF to assist the police in tackling priority crimes across the country.
The deployment, officially authorised for 13 months from March 2026 to 31 March 2027, will target hotspots in the Free State, Gauteng, North West, Western Cape, and Eastern Cape, though forces may be shifted depending on emerging threats.

Suspended SAPS Organised Crime head Major-General Richard Shibiri spent a dramatic week before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, forcefully rejecting allegations that he interfered in criminal investigations while accusing rival police factions of orchestrating a campaign to destroy his reputation.
Over days of testimony and cross-examination, Shibiri portrayed himself as a veteran officer caught in the middle of internal battles within the SAPS, insisting that claims linking him to organised crime networks were false.
“I have never interfered in any investigation, and I have never protected criminals. My conscience is clear,” Shibiri told the commission.

Struggle stalwart, Congress of the People (COPE) founder and former Defence Minister Mosiuoa “Terror” Lekota was laid to rest in Bloemfontein, Free State, at a Special Official Funeral in recognition of his patriotism and the role he played in the anti-apartheid struggle.
Political allies, mourners, and family members described Lekota as an extraordinary patriot who lived a life of service and sacrifice, and a constitutionalist who believed that freedom had to be defended even after it had been won.
They said he was willing to reach across political divides to unite South Africans of different persuasions, first to defeat the unjust system of apartheid and later to help build a democratic South Africa.
