This weekend, photographer Eddie Mtsweni documented life at the Mapoch Ndebele Village (Mabhoko) in Klipgat, north-west of Pretoria — a living cultural site where tradition continues under the leadership of King Mabhoko III.

At the Msiza homestead, the royal house hosted its annual gathering, where about 350 men and women came together to honour cultural duties after guiding their sons through initiation.

Families from the Msiza, Skosana, Bhuda, Mahlangu, Mkhwebane, Ntuli and Mtsweni clans attended, reflecting a shared commitment to preserving Ndebele heritage.

At the heart of the ceremony was a ritual exchange of respect and responsibility between the king and his people.

A cow was slaughtered, meals were shared, and the courtyard filled with song, conversation and ceremony — a moment of cultural continuity grounded in belonging, memory and collective identity.
