President Cyril Ramaphosa came under pressure in the National Assembly on Tuesday over South Africa’s water crisis, with Democratic Alliance (DA) MP George Michalakis accusing ANC-run municipalities of contributing to what he described as a “man-made” crisis.
Michalakis said several Johannesburg suburbs were without water, while residents in Matjhabeng had endured years of “watershedding” because of municipal debt and failures to maintain infrastructure.
“The national water crisis has been continuing for years. It’s a man-made crisis. It’s an ANC-made crisis through poor municipal administration,” Michalakis said.
He cited water shortages in Coronationville, Brixton, Westbury, Hurst Hill, Auckland Park, Melville and Parktown West.
Michalakis also raised the case of Masilonyana Local Municipality, which he said was in contempt of court for failing to provide water to residents in Winburg for three months.
He said eThekwini was losing 65% of its water, while Mangaung was losing 60%.
