A suspect arrested after being found in possession of an item belonging to murdered Kempton Park runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Police said on Monday that the suspect was likely to face a charge of possession of stolen property, while investigations into Moselakgomo’s killing continued.
“At this stage, no murder charge has been brought against the suspect,” SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said.
The murder of the 38-year-old drew renewed attention to a series of women’s deaths reported across Ekurhuleni.
Moselakgomo, a mother and regular runner who lived in Rhodesfield, Kempton Park, went missing on 9 September after leaving home for her usual afternoon run.
Her eight-year-old daughter raised the alarm when she failed to return home, prompting a search involving relatives and community members.
Her body was discovered in Rhodesfield on 13 September, and her family formally identified her remains at the Germiston mortuary the following day.
Moselakgomo’s death was among a series of killings that saw 12 women murdered across Ekurhuleni between July and September. While fears of a serial killer have gripped the community, police have said they have not established that all of the cases are connected.
A multidisciplinary task team involving detectives, forensic investigators and other specialised policing units has been established to determine any links between the killings.
