FORMER Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli and his co-accused Mthembeni Mthunzi have been sentenced to an effective five-year prison term for kidnapping and assault of Oupa Ramogibe in 1998.

In his judgment, the Johannesburg High Court Judge Ratha Mokgoathleng said Mdluli and his co-accused abused their power and authority as senior policemen in the force.

In July last year, Mdluli and Mthunzi were convicted of the kidnapping and assault of Mdluli’s ex-lover Tshidi Buhelelzi and her husband Ramogibe, including a friend Alice Manana.

The pair was working together at the time of the assault and kidnapping.

Ramogibe died in 1999 after he was gunned down, while Buthelezi died from an unknown illness.

Mdluli was charged with Ramogibe’s 1999 murder but those charges were later withdrawn.
