FORMER DA youth league leader Mbali Ntuli is set to challenge the party’s interim leader John Steenhuisen at the elective federal congress at the end of the month.

This follows the announcement of the names of candidates nominated to stand for election of party leadership at the congress, to be held between October 31 and November 1.

Ntuli believes that South Africans right now are looking for something different in a politician.

“Everybody is looking for politicians that are different. We are all crying out for leadership. And I think this would be the perfect time to showcase the kind of difference John and I have both for the vision for the country and the DA,” said Ntuli in a webinar recently.

“I think we are looking for leaders who are authentic, who are going to be kind, and who are really going to take in the lived realities of our people.”

The party said in a statement on Tuesday that preparations for DA’s Federal Congress is proceeding full steam ahead, and is progressing according to plan.

Nominations for the candidates standing for election opened on September 7 and closed on October 10.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown, the DA had to reimagine the format of our Federal Congress and chose to proceed virtually, with delegates attending congress from their homes and also from a variety of venues being made available nationwide,” said the party.

“This approach ensures that the Congress is extremely accessible to all delegates, from all communities.”

Veteran party leader Helen Zille will square off against Mike Moriarty for the influential position of chairperson of the federal council.
