Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has challenged President Cyril Ramaphosa to open the political space and to unban political activities, so that his party can go back to the picket lines because the banks are doing as they wish and the president is also doing as he wishes.

The EFF and other parties on Tuesday debated Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address that he delivered last Thursday.

The red berets have said in recent months that the EFF will reject any move aimed at holding local government elections which are planned for later this year.

Malema called on all political parties to engage in a process presided by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to assess whether there is a rational possibility of proceeding with Local Government Elections in 2021 in the face of a devastating pandemic

“Let all political parties honestly engage in a process presided by the Independent Electoral Commission to assess whether there is a rational possibility of proceeding with Local government elections in 2021 at the face of a devastating pandemic,” said Malema.

“Once we agree that it is not possible, we will approach the electoral court, in the same way it was done for all postponed by-elections to hold local government elections when the conditions permit for free, fair and transparent elections to occur.”

He added: “Mr President, Local Government Elections in 2021 will not be free, fair and transparent because holding elections includes the democratic right to campaign to all voters individually.”
