ABSA Group’s deputy chief executive officer (CEO), Peter Matlare, has died at the age of 61 due to COVID-19 related complications.
His family has confirmed to eNCA that he passed away on Sunday, after a battle with COVID-19.
Matlare, who was in possession of a BSc (Hons) and MA from the Universities of Plymouth and York respectively, served in many senior company positions, including as SABC CEO and as a Vodacom executive.
He was also the CEO of Tiger Brands Limited from 2008 to 2015, leading its failed venture into Nigeria, which cost the group billions.
Matlare was regarded as a pioneer for transformation, having led the SABC from 2001 to 2005, with the last year of his tenure being one of the most profitable for the state-owned broadcaster, which has in recent years been beset by financial and management crises.
