In a surprise move, DA councillor Tania Campbell has been elected the mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni.
Campbell won by 116, beating former mayor Mzwandile Masina by 11 votes.
He got 105 votes – 222 votes were cast and one was spoiled vote.
Campbell’s selection follows an earlier election which saw the DA take the Speaker position with the election of councillor Raymond Dhlamini.
Campbell was announced as DA mayoral candidate at the eleventh hour after Refiloe Nts’heke pulled out of the race.
Said Campbell: “I am completely humbled by the faith and trust placed in me as the executive mayor. This is a change our residents have been waiting for for 20 years. Now is not the time for promises, it is time to get things done.”
This was the party’s second victory on Monday, as it had earlier secured the council speaker position from the ANC’s Patricia Khumalo.
