COSATU in KwaZulu-Natal says it will go on a protest against fuel hikes and the high cost of living on Friday.
The union said on Tuesday that the fuel hikes have had a devastating impact on many people in South Africa.
The union also said they will also be picketing about escalating youth unemployment and poverty, and low wages.
According to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) for the first quarter of 2022 as provided by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), the unemployment rate was 63,9% for those aged 15-24 and 42,1% for those aged 25-34 years, while the current official national rate stands at 34,5%.
Fuel prices also rose at the beginning of June, leaving many citizens distraught.
“We do need to show our anger and concern at some point and this protest demonstration speaks exactly to that. We want the government to urgently intervene and work with speed to address the issues,” said provincial secretary Edwin Mkhize.
Mkhize has also called for a job summit to be held to discuss the many challenges facing South Africans such as the increase in VAT, tariffs, fuel and the rising of debt.
