THE NPA’s Investigating Directorate (ID) has arrested former Eskom acting chief executive Matshela Koko, his wife Mosima and his stepdaughter Koketso Choma on charges of corruption.
Koko, and several others, face charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering.
They are expected to apply for bail when they appear in the Middelburg magistrate’s court later on Thursday.
“The accused are to be arraigned on charges arising from alleged irregular contracts granted for the building of the Kusile power station valued at over R2bn,” said NPA Investigating Directorate spokesperson Sindisiwe Seboka.
Later in the day, the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court granted Koko bail of R300 000.
Mosima Koko, Koketso Aren, Johannes Coetzee and Thato Choma were granted bail of R70 000.
They were ordered to hand over their passports to ensure their attendance at trial.
They are all expected to return to court in March next year.
The Sunday Times first exposed Koko in 2017, detailing how he helped his stepdaughter Koketso Choma rake in about R800m through Eskom contracts with Impulse.
Koko was head of Eskom’s generation division at the time, while Choma was a director at Impulse between April 2016 and March 2017.
The reports also later revealed how, in 2016, Eskom paid R81m to Koko’s wife’s bank account via Impulse.
However, at the time, Koko’s role in the contracts was still unclear, but witnesses said he manipulated the events that led to the contract awarded to Impulse International, a company that has been linked to his stepdaughter, Koketso.
Koko allegedly removed Eskom subsidiary Eskom Rotek Industries (ERI) tender submission from the agenda of the said meeting, which compromised the company.
The tender was set to be awarded to ERI, but Koko allegedly irregularly removed a submission to that effect from the agenda of the board tender committee.
