Thousands of EFF supporters from all nine provinces of South Africa came in large numbers to celebrate the party’s 10th Anniversary at the FNB Stadium near Soweto in Joburg together with their CIC Julius Malema.
The party had a star-studded lineup of local artists and EFF supporters in their red colours arrived at the stadium early in the morning and by midday, the venue was a sea of red as their mostly youthful members sang and danced to popular music genres.
Reports are that food sellers ran out of goodies quite early as bus after bus of EFF supporters dropped off members outside the stadium, who rushed to where the vendors were lined up with their wares including hot food and snacks.
The crowds got into a frenzy when Malema, flanked by his deputy Floyd Shivambu arrived at the venue and did a walkabout with both hands raised in an EFF signature greeting. Some among the excited crowd raised banners with the words ‘Malema 4 President’ and ‘RIP ANC’ written on them.
Later the party’s top leaders went on stage and held up glasses of champagne in a toast before cutting a red, green and black cake inscribed in yellow icing with the words ‘ 10 years of unbroken struggle’.
Police and JMPD members were parked at strategic places around the stadium and in Soweto however, the event went on peacefully as jubilant members filed back into their buses on their way back home.
