President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday offered condolences to the people of the Republic of Mozambique following a disaster at sea in which nearly 100 people perished when an overcrowded boat sank.
Reports say at least 97 people died, and a small number of were rescued in the incident which took place near Lunga in Nampula Province on Sunday, 07 April 2024.
Ramaphosa also extended condolences to President Filipe Nyusi and to the families who have lost relatives.
“As neighbours, we are deeply saddened by this tragedy and we wish authorities and citizens well in the recovery effort and the search for missing persons.
“We also pray for a speedy recovery for survivors of this incident,” he said.
According to reports the vessel was an overloaded fishing boat and was not licensed to transport people.
“The passengers were fleeing cholera, because the boat was overcrowded and unsuited to carry passengers, it ended up sinking. Many children were among the dead,” an official was quoted by the local media as saying.
