After much anticipation and speculation, the Presidency has announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa will finally announce his new Cabinet on Sunday night.
A short statement released by the Presidency, said the announcement will be in the form of a televised address to the nation – following the inauguration of President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday 19 June after his election by the National Assembly on Friday 14 June.
The new National Executive will constitute the 7th Democratic Administration as a Government of National Unity comprising a diversity of political parties as an outcome of the national and provincial elections held on Wednesday, 29 May 2024, read the statement.
The past week has been characterised with leaked letters between the ANC and DA, haggling over positions where it is reported that the DA wanted 11 Cabinet seats, Deputy Ministers and Deputy Director Generals among other demands.
The letters show that at some point the ANC dug in its heels and offered the DA less than what it had demanded in the beginning. This was followed by reports from mainstream media that the DA had threatened to walk out of the GNU if the ANC failed to give in to its demands.
However, latest reports said the ANC and DA finally settled on six cabinet positions including Basic Education, Home Affairs and Tourism among others.
The Sunday Times which is privy to the horse trading taking place between the ANC and DA lead with the headlines – “It’s a Done Deal” on Sunday morning and as to be expected, in the afternoon the Presidency announced that Ramaphosa will address the nation on the appointment of his cabinet after a week of “tough negotiations”.
