Police in Seshego, Limpopo, have arrested a 28-year-old man on statutory rape charges after a 13-year-old girl gave birth at Seshego Hospital on December 25, 2024.
The suspect is in custody and will appear before the Seshego Magistrate’s Court.
Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba has welcomed the swift police response after the hospital raised concerns.
“It is now our responsibility to ensure that the judiciary acts in accordance with the severity of this crime. Statutory rape is prevalent in many parts of our province, and we must bring such cases to an end,” she said.
Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed the arrest.
The 13-year-old mother was the youngest among 31 teenagers who gave birth on Christmas Day in Limpopo, out of a total of 172 births in the province.
Ramathuba said that there was no justification for an adult engaging in a sexual relationship with a minor.
“We condemn these acts in the strongest terms,” she said.
