The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape has opened a crimen injuria case against SABC brand manager Nobuntu Mkhize, who allegedly hurled racist remarks towards the coloured community while invoking the ANC’s name.
The incident occurred on Boxing Day during a FlySafair flight from Durban to Cape Town. Videos captured by fellow passengers have been widely shared on social media platforms.
Provincial DA leader Tertuis Simmers and other party representatives laid the charges at the Bishop Lavis police station on Monday.
A case of assault was also opened by the South African Police Service, after Mkhize’s statement.
Simmers said this approach by the party sent a powerful message that racism would not be tolerated.
“The DA’s values and pillars are fixated on a racism-free society where citizens can thrive and live free from prejudice, abuse and hatred,” he said in a statement.
