Gauteng roads and transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela has expressed concern over increasing criminal incidents caused by road spiking and rock placements in areas where traffic lights and street lights have been vandalised.
The MEC’s spokesperson, Lesiba Mpya, said in a statement on Monday that motorists must be on the lookout on the roads due to high levels of vandalism, which were resulting in robberies.
The warning follows the destruction of streetlights along the R24 road near O.R. Tambo International Airport over the weekend.
Mpya said other high-risk areas included the R55, the M1 between Buccleuch Interchange and Corlett Drive, R82, R23 and the N12. This criminal activity was a cause for concern for both motorists and pedestrians.
The department said it was working with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to develop advanced strategies and initiatives aimed at preventing the vandalism and improving safety.
The MEC has assured Gauteng’s citizens that the department’s road maintenance teams were on standby to address infrastructure issues.
