Jordaan, co-accused challenge case in Gauteng High Court

SA Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan and CFO Gronie Hluyo have approached the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg with a review application.

Jordaan and Hluyo are contesting the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court’s decision to reject their bid to have charges dropped last year. They reappeared in court on Friday, facing fraud charges over allegations that Jordaan misused SAFA funds for personal gain.

The two officials are seeking legal recourse in the matter, challenging proceedings or decisions that have been made.

Jordaan is accused of embezzling R1.3 million from the SAFA for personal use.

Last year, Jordaan and Hluyo attempted to invoke Section 342A of the Criminal Procedure Act, arguing that their case had faced unreasonable delays caused by ongoing interlocutory matters.

That attempt to have the case struck from the roll was unsuccessful with Magistrate Sheron Soko-Rantao finding that the lower court did not have the jurisdiction to consider such an application.

The duo is now seeking the High Court’s intervention to review the decision, aiming to challenge the dismissal of their application. They hope the court will reconsider their request, arguing that delays in their case warrant a reassessment of the ruling.

“We have respectfully disagreed with your ruling on the 10th of December and we filed an application to review that decision. Those papers were issued yesterday. I think they have been served on you,” explained Jordan’s lawyer to the court, advocate Norman Arendse.

Arendse mentioned that they might also present arguments to the provincial Director of Public Prosecutions to seek the dismissal of the charges against the pair.
