Five border posts closed following flooding

The Border Management Authority (BMA) has suspended operations at Stockpoort, Makgobistad, Bray, Groblersbridge, and Pontdrift ports of entry due to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

BMA commissioner Michael Masiapato said on Monday that Makgobistad was closed due to the flooding of the Molopo River.

“At Stockpoort port of entry, operations have been suspended as the port is completely surrounded by water. The corridor leading to the port, the operational area and the bridge after the port have been submerged,” Masiapato said in a statement.

“BMA and other law enforcement officials were stranded on the island where the immigration office is located, making movement impossible.”

He said the emergency medical services in Limpopo were activated on Sunday to evacuate all affected employees. A helicopter had to be used.

Water levels have subsided at the Derdepoort port of entry and normal operations have now resumed.

Masiapato advised travellers and commercial operators to use Ramatlabama, Kopfontein, Beitbridge and Skilpadshek as alternatives for cross-border movement.

He said the BMA would continue to monitor weather conditions across all ports of entry and provide timely updates as the situation developed.

“We urge travellers and transporters to make alternative arrangements and remain informed through official BMA communication channels,” Masiapato added.
