SABC fails to pay staff, blames bank ‘glitch’

Staff Reporter

The financial distressed SABC failed to pay its employees on time this month, but the public broadcaster has said it’s not because it’s run out of money. Instead, it has blamed a “glitch” at its bank for the problem.

SABC staff are usually paid on the 29th of the month. (Update: The corporation’s employees were paid at around midday on Tuesday.)

“We are told it is a technical error by the bank and that it will be sorted out in the next few hours,” SABC spokeswoman Neo Momodu told the Morning Live television show on Tuesday.

Asked by show host Leanne Manas whether the SABC has run out of money — the board has warned it may not be able to pay staff after March — Momodu said corporation’s chief financial officer made payment to “the banks yesterday” and that it nothing to do with “day zero”.

“They will be paid on the 29th, as has always been the case.”

We as the SABC are saying that staff will be paid today. There is a technical error that has nothing to do with the the SABC. It’s a fault on the bank’s side, which we have been assured will be sorted out and staff will be paid today.”  — (c) 2019 NewsCentral Media
