President Cyril Ramaphosa officially welcomed world leaders to Johannesburg on Saturday as South Africa hosts the historic G20 Leaders’ Summit.
Ramaphosa opened the G20 Leaders’ Summit at the Nasrec Expo Centre.
He welcomed heads of state and international delegates to South Africa. This G20 Leaders’ Summit marks a historic milestone as it is the first time the G20 has convened on African territory.
In his opening remarks, Ramaphosa emphasised solidarity, inclusivity, and sustainable development as guiding principles for South Africa’s G20 presidency.
The summit agenda reflects how leaders are expected to deliberate on trade, financing for development, debt relief, and climate action, with a particular focus on the needs of the global south.
Delegates from across the world arrived in Johannesburg for the two day summit, including representatives from the European Union, the United Kingdom, China, India, and other major economies.
As sessions continue, leaders will break into smaller working groups to tackle pressing issues such as debt burdens, climate financing, and sustainable growth strategies.
