The ANC has instructed two North West officials arrested in a Hawks anti-corruption operation linked to a municipal tender to step aside from their posts.
Bojanala regional secretary Raymond Moraile and Madibeng Municipality mayoral committee member Peter Legong were this week arrested in an operation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), known as the Hawks.
ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said the party supported law enforcement and was committed “to the rule of law and due process”.
“Both Cde Raymond Moraile and Cde Peter Legong are immediately placed on step aside from all organisational and government responsibilities pending the finalisation of their legal processes,” she said.
Bhengu-Motsiri said the step-aside move was intended to protect the party’s integrity and public institutions.
The pair, and a third suspect, identified as a municipal driver, were arrested in Menlyn, Pretoria, after allegedly seeking R300,000 from a businessman in exchange for help securing a tender that was advertised by Madibeng Municipality in November.
The accused appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court and the matter was postponed to 15 December for further investigation.
The ANC’s step-aside policy has been central to its “renewal” drive, with the party under pressure to demonstrate tougher action against corruption ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
