Popular South African radio and television personality Warrick Stock, widely known as DJ Warras, has been shot and killed in Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon, 16 December 2025. He was 40.

Police confirmed that the shooting occurred outside a high-rise building in the Johannesburg CBD, near the Carlton Centre.

DJ Warras was declared dead at the scene.

Details surrounding the incident remain sketchy. Early reports suggest the building is believed to be hijacked, though this has not yet been formally confirmed by authorities.

A heavy police and private security presence remained at the scene as officers secured the area.

Emergency personnel and forensic investigators were seen combing the vicinity for evidence, while traffic in surrounding streets was partially disrupted.

At this stage, police have not released details regarding possible suspects, the motive for the shooting, or whether DJ Warras was specifically targeted.

Authorities have indicated that a full investigation is underway and that further information will be released once preliminary findings are confirmed.

DJ Warras, a former Live Amp presenter and YFM host, was a well-known and respected voice in South African entertainment and pop culture.

Known for his sharp commentary and outspoken views, he successfully transitioned from music into television and digital media, where he built a strong and loyal following.

In the hours leading up to his death, Warras was active on social media — a detail that has intensified public shock and speculation.

His final post on X, shared shortly after midday, commented on a reported police standoff with suspected criminals in the North West.

In the post, he questioned law enforcement’s handling of the situation, a subject he frequently addressed online.

In recent weeks, the DJ had also weighed in on several high-profile criminal cases, including commentary on controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

Through his posts, Warras positioned himself as a digital watchdog, using his platform to critique crime, justice and accountability in South Africa.

News of his death spread rapidly across social media, triggering an outpouring of grief from fans, fellow DJs, broadcasters and public figures.

Many described him as vibrant, fearless and deeply engaged with the realities of everyday South African life.

Tributes highlighted not only his contribution to music and television, but also his willingness to speak openly on social issues.

Police investigators remained at the scene late into the afternoon as they worked to piece together the events leading to the killing of one of the country’s most recognisable media personalities.

Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.

Reports indicate that Warras was inspecting buildings under the supervision of members from his own security company, JT VIP Elite Guarding and VIP Protection Services, at the time of the shooting. This information has not yet been officially confirmed.

This is a developing story.
