President Cyril Ramaphosa’s 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) set out a convincing agenda for recovery, reform, and inclusive growth.
The address reaffirmed government’s commitment to tackling persistent challenges while consolidating recent gains.
Economic recovery and growth
Ramaphosa highlighted that South Africa’s economy is in a stronger position than a year ago, with four consecutive quarters of GDP growth, falling interest rates, a stronger rand, and inflation at its lowest level in two decades.
He praised reforms under Operation Vulindlela, which have accelerated investment and competition, while stressing that growth must be faster to meet social and economic needs. Debt stabilisation and declining borrowing costs were cited as signs of fiscal resilience.
Social support and public Health
The President reaffirmed that Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) remains a national crisis, demanding collective action.
He announced the rollout of lenacapavir, a groundbreaking HIV prevention injection, from April 2026, underscoring government’s commitment to safeguarding public health.
Infrastructure and service delivery
Ramaphosa acknowledged the water crisis affecting communities and pledged urgent infrastructure investment to restore dignity and reliable service delivery.
He declared 2026 the “Year of Decisive Action” to fix local government, strengthen municipalities, and accelerate economic transformation.
Agriculture and food Security
The President committed to decisive action against foot-and-mouth disease, protecting agriculture as a key pillar of economic activity and job creation.
Education and student access
Ramaphosa reaffirmed reforms within NSFAS, noting strengthened integrity and efficiency in student funding. He linked this to broader commitments to expand access to higher education and skills development.
Global standing and trade relations
On international relations, Ramaphosa emphasized South Africa’s role in progressive multilateralism, citing trade frameworks such as AGOA and AU Agenda 2063. He noted the successful hosting of the G20 Summit, which positioned South Africa as a credible global voice.
Governance and transformation
Ramaphosa reaffirmed the government’s determination to confront corruption and crime, citing the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry as part of accountability efforts. He added that there would be a deployment of the SANDF to Gauteng and Western Cape to deal with illegal mining and gangsterism.
He stressed unity, non-racialism, and equity, drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s vision.
